Engine and Drivetrain FAQs

What oil does a Mercedes Sprinter take?

Sprinter diesels require MB 229.52 rated low ash full synthetic oil. Using the wrong grade shortens DPF life and can trip emissions faults, so we only fill with the approved specification.

Can I drive with a bad glow plug?

You may still start, but a failed plug strains the starter and battery and can crack over time. Replacing early avoids a seized plug that turns a simple job into an extraction.

Is it the turbo or just the actuator?

Many boost complaints are the actuator, not the whole turbo. We test both so you are not paying for a full turbo when a calibrated actuator solves it.

How often does a Sprinter EGR need cleaning?

Vans that do a lot of short Riverside trips carbon up faster. Many benefit from an EGR clean around every 60,000 to 90,000 miles or when symptoms appear.

What happens if a Sprinter timing chain breaks?

A jumped or broken chain can bend valves and damage pistons, which is a major repair. Inspecting at the first rattle is far cheaper than an engine rebuild.
