What the DEF countdown actually means
When your Sprinter shows a message like start refused in a set number of starts, the emissions system has flagged a fault it cannot clear on its own. The countdown is the vehicle protecting the SCR system and warning you before it limits starting. It is not a suggestion, and topping off AdBlue rarely makes it go away.
The most common triggers we see in Riverside are a failed DEF heater, a lazy NOx sensor, a DEF quality reading that is out of range, or a wiring fault in the DEF pump circuit. Heat makes marginal parts fail sooner, which is why these show up in summer.
Why summer makes it worse

Can I reset a Sprinter DEF countdown myself?
No. The counter only resets after the underlying fault is repaired and cleared with a factory tool. Clearing it without fixing the cause just delays the same problem.
Will adding more DEF stop the countdown?
Only if the van was genuinely low. Most countdowns are caused by a sensor or heater fault, and adding fluid will not clear those.
